Semaphore 7, Red Blend, Alentejano, Portugal, 2009

Semaphore 7 is a Portuguese wine from the Alentenjano region. This is a blend of mainly Temparanillo with Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet. Now, Temparanillo is a nice Sangiovese-ish style red, with a strong mouth feel  but can be tannic when young. I know nothing of the other two. What I can gather from the internet, Trincadeira is a coloring wine with a floral sent and Alicante Bouschet is a thinning wine that also used for coloring.

This is my favorite sub $12 bottle of wine. Juicy and floral, I feel that it can hold up to most any food you can throw at it. Tonight I threw honey pretzels and spinach cream cheese at Semaphore 7, guess what happened? It, not surprisingly, outdid my hasty paring.
